Discussion on Influence and Design:

Before I start, I want to begin by stating some facts: most people are addicted to social media. These apps are designed in such a way that makes us vulnerable to checking them 100 times a day. Combining that with the need for human connection can create the perfect formula for keeping people glued to their phones.

Everything I say going forward is based on research and studies, I have no particular agenda except to state what is true. You may say WhatsApp is different from social media, but is it actually? No. All social media channels are essentially marketing funnels, and WhatsApp is no different. They all have features designed to keep users engaged and on the platform.

Analysis on Business Models:

All these social media platforms run on the advertising business model, and in simple terms, without retaining your attention, they will go out of business. From Facebook to Instagram to Snapchat, they all have manipulative tactics in place to keep you coming back several times a day. This splits attention and reduces people’s ability to focus for an extended period of time. This also has an effect on people’s productivity and well-being.

Blurring Boundaries:

There is a valid reason why companies have policies around not using WhatsApp or other forms of personal messaging services for business communications. Beyond the privacy concerns, it has to do with blurring the lines between personal and professional life. When this happens, the idea of work-life balance goes out the window, and you may feel like you are constantly working.

Impact on Mental Health:

Blurring the lines between personal and professional will eventually lead to burnout, decline in performance, and studies have shown in some cases even resignations. Do not believe these people who want to inspire and motivate you to work nonstop, they don’t understand the implications of what they say and lack knowledge in the fields of mental health and well-being.

Potential for Conflict:

Another issue is that a lot of shaming, bullying, and arguments can occur, especially in large work-related groups. Have you ever been called out for not doing your work as best as you could? Or not performing well and hitting your targets? In a group setting, this can be considered a shaming tactic. This, in itself, can affect morale and productivity, turning coworkers into secret enemies.
