This is an interesting question: this is a question of someone who might be quite skeptical in nature, and to be honest, to a certain degree, I would agree with them. But I understand that when you change how you look at things, things change.

The Power of Perception:

Rather than using the words positive or negative to describe the situation, it’s better to describe it based on your philosophical outlook on life. If you believe the grass is greener on the other side, then it most likely is. It’s all about perception, really.

The Role of Belief:

If you find someone who has a deeper understanding of life and sees the world in a beautiful way, then it will be really hard to convince them that the world is a dark place.

Analogy to Religious Teachings:

Have you seen the face of a believer? These are a rare breed of people; they wander around in hidden places. When you engage with them, you will feel they are not living in reality based on your perception of reality, while in truth, they are the closest to reality.

So you ask the question again? Does positive thinking really work? And I respond by saying, only if you truly believe in it. It is like magic, as God says in the Quran: only believers will attain paradise, and disbelievers will be in hellfire. Paradise is associated with being positive and seeing the world in a beautiful way, while hellfire is associated with being negative and seeing the world in an ugly way.
